Dry or Sweet red wine

So, when I ask for a glass of red wine at a restaurant or a bar in Addis, I often get asked if I want 'dry or sweet'? It is confusing because I only know the question for white wine. 

Well, finally saw red wine labelled as 'dry or sweet'. I may have found the answer to why the question is asked.
